Having a guitar in an elevator is a great way to meet students.
I was on my way to spend some time in the Bible with a friend of
mine, and I had my guitar with me because I wanted to keep it from
sitting in the car in the cold all day. So, armed with my guitar,
I got on the elevator to my friend's room and ended up meeting a
guy named Dave. From the lobby to the fourth floor, Dave had enough
time to ask me about the guitar and find out that it was one of his
favorite kinds. We both got off at the same floor, and he asked if he
could see it out of the case. Well, before I knew it, I was in a dorm
room with this guy I had just met and the friend I was coming to visit.
For an hour, Dave played my guitar, and the three of us talked music.
This is exactly the kind of thing I have seen God use to start
relationships. Now instead of just being another guy in an elevator,
Dave is another guy in an elevator who loves to play guitar and needs
to know Jesus. And it is upon these things that I pray I can build a
friendship with Dave. You see, I didn't want to bring my guitar into
the dorm. I didn't want to carry it around all day, but that is what
I ended up having to do, and God used it. I have no doubts that God
even planned it. This is so often how He takes what I see as nothing
and turns it into something. This is ministry from the ground up.
Maybe in a few weeks or months will I not only play the guitar with
Dave, but I'll read the Bible with him too.
